In a memorial notice they described him as "a man of high humanitarian principle."6 He was president of the United Hospital Fund of New York about 25 November 1957.6,3 He was noted to say he was descended from one of the first tobacco growers in the new world, as he traced his ancestry to Daniel McComas, who settled in 1687 on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and started growing tobacco.3 He died on 25 November 1957 in New York, New York, suddenly after an operation at age 62.1,6,3
