Biography

Catherine Sterner was also known as Catherine Craumer.1 She was born on 2 October 1831 in Brodbecks, York County, Pennsylvania.1 In 1847 Catherine Sterner was converted and united with the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.1 In 1850, Catherine Sterner appeared on the census in N. Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her parents, John Sterner, Sr., and Elizabeth Kessler.2 Catherine Sterner married Rev. William H Craumer on 2 December 1852.1 Rev. William H Craumer and she appeared in the census in 1860 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning $750 in real estate and $175 in personal property. Elias S Craumer, Lucinda F Craumer, Mary Jane Craumer, and Sarah Elizabeth Craumer were living in the household with their parents.3 Rev. William H Craumer and Catherine Sterner appeared in the census in 1870 in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning no real estate and $400 in personal property. Catherine could read but could not write. In fact, she had been present at the Communion Service the week before she died.1 On 8 October 1916, her funeral was conducted in the First Church, York, PA, and officiated by Rev A.A. Long (the pastor), assisted by Revs. R.R. Rodes, J.P.Koontz, and Joseph Daughtery, a former pastor. There were 13 ministers present.1 She died on 8 October 1916 at 533 West Princess Street in York City, York County, Pennsylvania, at 1:00 AM at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles T. Smith at age 85. The death was witnessed by Margaret Craumer.1 Catherine Sterner was buried on 11 October 1916 at Greenmount Cemetery in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1

Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents, John Sterner, Sr., and Elizabeth Kessler.3 Jesse Sterner married Leah Deagen about 1854. He and Leah Deagen appeared in the census in June 1860 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning no real estate, but having $643 in personal property. Dr. Edward D. Sterner, Jacob Deagan Sterner, Priscilla Irene Sterner, and Conrad D. Sterner were living in the household with their parents.4 In 1860 Jesse Sterner was a farm laborer.4 In 1880 Jesse Sterner was a farmer.5 He and Leah Deagen appeared in the census in 1880 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, in the household of her parents, John Sterner, Sr., and Elizabeth Kessler.2 Julia Sterner married Jacob Brenneman about 1856. Earlier, Julia's sister Elizabeth married Jacob's brother Christian. Jacob Brenneman and she appeared in the census in 1860 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning $1313 in personal property.
