Johannes Ruhl was born on 27 September 1739.1,2 He married Helena Schenck on 14 August 1764 at Christ's Lutheran Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the father at the baptism of Anna Margaretha Ruhl on 9 June 1767 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,3 On 18 June 1767, Johannes Ruhl had land surveyed consisting of 85 and 3/8 acres.1 On 14 October 1768, Johannes Ruhl had land surveyed known as "Ruhls's Abode" (53 acres and 11 perches.)1 He was a sponsor at the baptism of Magdalena Ruhl, his niece, on 20 October 1771 in St. Jacob's.1 After 30 March 1777, Johannes Ruhl and Frederick Ruhl were appointed guardians of their brother's children, John Ruhl, Susanna Ruhl, Magdalena Ruhl, Johann Peter Ruhl, and Heinrich Ruhl.1 Johannes Ruhl registered for military service between 1778 and 1782 in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain George Hoover's Company of Associators of Codorus Twp, and a private in Captain John Sherer's Company No. 8 of the 7th Battalion of the York County Militia.1 He owned 100 acres, 2 horses, and 4 cattle in 1779.1 He owned 80 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle in 1780.1 On 30 January 1781, Johannes Ruhl was a member of the second class of inhabitants of Codorus Twp, classified under an act of assembly passed in 1780, entitled "An Act to Complete the Quota of the Federal Army", which required each class to provide, within 15 days, one able-bodied recruit for the Continental Army, to serve during the way, with a penalty of a 15 pound fine. The class proved delinquent.1 He owned 235 acres in 1781.1 He owned 225 acres, 2 horses, and 4 cattle in 1782.1 He owned 225 acres, 1 house, 1 outhouse, 3 horses, 3 horned cattle, and 8 sheep in 1783.1 On 6 May 1790, Johannes Ruhl obtained a land patent known as "Square Compas" (94 acres and 149 perches) from the Commonwealth of PA.1 In 1794 Johannes Ruhl was one of the founders of Bethlehem Union Church.1 On 18 January 1812, Johannes Ruhl purchased land known as "George Town" (130 acres 111 perches) and another plot of 11 acres 12 perches in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, from Georg Philip and Loveis DeHoff.1 He died on 23 January 1825 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, at age 85.1,2 He was buried after 23 January 1825 at Steltz Union (Bethlehem) Church Cemetery in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,2

Biography

Frederick Ruhl was born about 1737.1 He migrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 27 August 1739 together with Peter Ruhl, Anna Margaretha Ruhl, and Anna Catharina on the ship "Samuel", captained by Hugh Percy.1,2,3 About 27 August 1739 Frederick Ruhl lived in Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania,] with Peter Ruhl, Anna Catharina, and Anna Margaretha Ruhl.1 Frederick Ruhl married Maria Elisabeth Bahn on 7 January 1759 at Christ's Lutheran Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania.1 About 1759 Frederick Ruhl was a cordwainer.1 He was naturalised on 15 September 1765.1 On 24 December 1770, Frederick Ruhl purchased land in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania, (3 acres and 64 perches) from Jacob and Barbara Updegraff.1 He married Catherina Eva Kann in 1770.1 On 8 March 1773, Frederick Ruhl sold land (3 acres and 64 perches) to Jacob Welschantz.1 After 8 March 1773, Frederick Ruhl and Catherina Eva Kann lived in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1 On 7 May 1773, Frederick Ruhl purchased land known as "Pleasant Ridge" (96 acres 9 perches) from Robert and John Freeland.1 About 1773 Frederick Ruhl was a yeoman.1 He registered for military service about 1776 in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain John Miller's Company No 3 of the 7th Battalion of the York County Militia.1 After 30 March 1777, Frederick Ruhl and Johannes Ruhl were appointed guardians of their brother's children, John Ruhl, Susanna Ruhl, Magdalena Ruhl, Johann Peter Ruhl, and Heinrich Ruhl.1 Frederick Ruhl registered for military service in 1780 as a private in Captain Aquila Wiley's Company of the 5th Battalion of the York County Militia.1 On 30 January 1781, Frederick Ruhl was a member of the first class of inhabitants of Shrewsbury Twp, and the second class of inhabitants of Codorus Twp, classified under an act of assembly passed in 1780, entitled "An Act to Complete the Quota of the Federal Army", which required each class to provide, within 15 days, one able-bodied recruit for the Continental Army, to serve during the war, with a penalty of a 15 pound fine. Both classes proved delinquent.1 He began military service on 8 December 1781 as a wagoner in Captain William Lindsay's Company.1 He ended military service on 8 February 1782.1 On 15 November 1785, Frederick Ruhl purchased land known as "Pleasant Ridge" (a 140 acre portion which was added) from John and Mary Mahon.1 He and Catherina Eva Kann executed a land record to transfer ownership to Heinrich Ruhl on 16 July 1802.1 Frederick Ruhl made a will on 25 May 1810. The executors were John Ruhl and Michael Eyrich.1 Frederick Ruhl died between 25 May 1810 and 17 October 1815.1 He had his estate probated on 17 October 1815.1
