In 1870 and 1880 census, only 1 of the 2 appears yet they are approximately the same age. He died on 21 December 1939 at age 78.2,3 He was buried after 21 December 1939 at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery in Carroll County, Maryland.2,3

Biography

Daniel S. Coltrider was born on 31 March 1818 in Maryland.1,3 He was baptised on 19 July 1818 at Kreider's Reformed Church in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. The sponsors were Peter Weimert and Louisa.3 In 1830, Daniel S. Coltrider appeared on the census in District 7, Carroll County, Maryland, in the household of his parents, Frederick Coltrider and Barbara.4 In 1850 Daniel S. Coltrider was a farmer.1 In 1850, Daniel S. Coltrider appeared on the census in District 7, Carroll County, Maryland, in the household of his parents, Frederick Coltrider and Barbara.1 Daniel S. Coltrider married Elizabeth about 1860.5 He registered for military service on 28 July 1861 in Cockeysville, Baltimore County, Maryland.2 He was described as 5'9" tall with dark hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion on 28 July 1861.2 On 28 July 1861 Daniel S. Coltrider was a paper maker.2 He began military service on 8 August 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland, enlisting for a term of 3 years as a private in Company F of the 2nd Regiment of the Maryland Infantry.2 Between 1 January 1862 and 28 August 1862, Daniel S. Coltrider was present as a Private in Company F, 2nd regiment, Maryland Infantry.2 On 29 August 1862 Daniel S. Coltrider wounded in action the second battle of Bull Run in Prince William County, Virginia.2 Between 1 September 1862 and 10 December 1862, Daniel S. Coltrider was present with his regiment.2 On 11 December 1862 Daniel S. Coltrider deserted. His story was that while his regiment was on the march from Harper's Ferry to Fredicksburg, he was unable to keep up due to a rupture, and fell out of the ranks. He went to Baltimore, where he reported to Surgeon Russell of Stewarts Mansion Hospital. He claims he was told that the hospital was full, and to go home. He did so, where he remained about four months. He was arrested on Feb 14th, 1864 in Baltimore in Falmouth Station, Virginia.2 On 16 February 1864 Daniel S. Coltrider was arrested as a deserter. He was sent to Major Hagner, the Provost Marshal in 3rd District, Maryland.2 Between 1 May 1864 and 30 August 1864 Daniel S. Coltrider was under arrest and awaiting trial in Ft McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland.2 On 26 August 1864 Daniel S. Coltrider was to be returned to duty, forfeit all pay and allowances due and $10/month pay for 15 months. He was ordered to make good on all time lost by deserting.2 Between 1 September 1864 and 30 June 1865, Daniel S. Coltrider was present with his regiment.2 He ended military service on 17 July 1865 in near Alexandria, Virginia. He was listed as being last paid Dec 31, 1864, and oweing the government $4.65 plus $25.53 for money advanced.2 He died before 21 July 1888.5

Biography

Josephus W Powell was born on 29 March 1837 in Maryland.1,3 He married Catherine Coltrider about 1858.1 In 1860 Josephus W Powell was a laborer.1 In 1860, Josephus W Powell appeared on the census in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, in the household of Frederick Coltrider and Barbara.1 Josephus W Powell began military service in September 1863 in Union Town, Carroll County, Maryland, stating that he was a laborer.4 He was described as 5' 8" tall, with dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair on 13 February 1864.5 He began military service on 13 February 1864 in Baltimore, Maryland, as a private in Company E, 1st Regiment of the Maryland Cavalry for a 3 year term, and received $60 bounty and 1 month advance pay, with $40 bounty remaining unpaid.4 On 14 August 1864, Josephus W Powell was wounded in action by a gun shot wound in right side (and sent to hospital in Washington DC thru roughly the end of the year) in Deep Bottom, Virginia.5 On 3 February 1865, near Darbytown Road, Virginia, Josephus W Powell was badly wounded while on picket duty (gun shot wound through left foot) and sent to the hospital at Point of Rocks, VA. He was charged $3.95 for the lost of 1 carbine screwdriver, 1 brushwiper, 1 sabre knot, and 1 pair of saddle bags.5 About May 1865, Josephus W Powell was transferred to Patterson Park Hospital in Baltimore.5 He ended military service on 17 July 1865 at General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was listed as being paid through 13 Mar 1864, owed 3 cents for clothing, and $240 in bounty ($60 already paid.)5 He and Catherine Coltrider appeared in the census in 1870 in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, listed as owning $1800 in real estate, $400 in personal property, and not being able to write. William H Jacob, Susanna M Powell, Mary C Powell, and Hannah C V Powell were living in the household with their parents.2 Josephus W Powell died on 7 April 1877 at age 40.3 He was buried after 7 April 1877 at St. Mary's Cemetery in Silver Run, Carroll County, Maryland.3
