Biography
Stephen Onion was born about 1715 in Staffordshire, England.1,2 He married Deborah about 1735.1,3 In 1747, Stephen Onion lived in Baltimore County, Maryland.3 In 1749, Stephen Onion was one of the pioneer ironmakers in the colonies, and was instrumental in the erection of the Principio Iron Works.2 In April 1750, Stephen Onion sold the Principio Iron Works to Col. Thomas White and Thomas Harrison (was owned by the company of Onion & Lawson.)2 He owned 50 acres called Eliza French's Lot, 260 acres called Ann's Delight, and other tracts in 1750.3 He made a will on 24 August 1754 in Maryland. The will required Zacchaeus BARRETT, his nephew, to take on the surname of ONION in return for inheriting half of Stephen's estate. Stephen was ensuring that his property would always be held by someone bearing the ONION surname. Zacchaeus Barrett, Deborah, and Thomas Onion were named as heirs. Joyce Onion and Susanna Onion were mentioned in the will.1,3 Stephen Onion died on 26 August 1754 at his Ironworks on Gunpowder Rd.3 He had his estate probated on 8 October 1754. Susanna Onion, Thomas Onion, Zacchaeus Barrett, and Deborah were beneficiaries. The estate was inventoried and valued at 4830.18.0 pounds.3

Deborah was also known as Deborah Onion.1 She was also known as Deborah Smith.2 She was born about 1715.1 She married Stephen Onion about 1735.1,2 On 24 August 1754, in Maryland, Deborah was named as an heir in the will of Stephen Onion, her husband, to receive 1/2 of his estate. She was to manage the complete estate until Stephen's nephew Zacheus came of age, at which time she was to give him 1/2 of the estate. A codiicil also left her all the household goods and 2 tracts of land -- ONION'S FISHERY and ONION'S WILDERNESS -- both lying on the Susquehannah River. Other heirs were Zacchaeus Barrett and Thomas Onion.1,2 On 8 October 1754, Deborah was a beneficiary of the will of Stephen Onion, her husband.2 She married Joseph Smith on 16 May 1757.2,3,4

Other heirs were Daniel Preston and Bernard Preston.3 James Preston married Sarah Poteet on 15 May 1733 in St. George's Parish, Baltimore, Maryland.3,6,7,4,2 About 1735 James Preston was a justice of Baltimore County Maryland in Baltimore County, Maryland.1 In 1744, James Preston was a member of the vestry of the Spesutia Church (Protestant Episcopal) in St. George's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland.5 He married Clemency Taylor on 31 March 1749.1,3,6,7,4,2 In 1750 James Preston owned 150 acre portion of Dennis' Choice, 100 acres called Preston's Chance, 100 acres called The Vineyard, and a 25 acre portion of Andrew's Addition.3 He made a will on 17 September 1766. His estate as valued at 703.19.3 pounds, and consisting of the following property: PRESTON'S SEARCH, PLUM POINT, ROBINSON'S CHANCE, HOG NECK, DENNISES CHOICE (alias JAMES CHOICE), PRESTON'S CHANCE, ANDREW'S ADDITION, and SIMON'S NEIGHBOR. The executor was Clemency Taylor who was also an heir. Martin Preston, Barnard Preston, Ann Preston, Mary Preston, Sarah Preston, and Elizabeth Preston were named as heirs. James Preston and Benjamin Preston were mentioned in the will. James Moore, Samuel Durham, and Thomas Pycraft were witnesses to the will.8 James Preston died in 1766 in Baltimore County, Maryland, at age ~53.3,2

Clemency Taylor was also known as Clemency Preston.1,2 She was also known as Clemency Bond.1 She was born about 1714.1 She married Benjamin Bond on 28 May 1737.1,3,4 On 4 August 1746, Benjamin Bond and Clemency Taylor sold land known as "Abell's Lot" (a 150 acre portion) in Baltimore County, Maryland.5 She married James Preston on 31 March 1749.1,2,3,4,6,7 She was named as executor in the will of James Preston, her husband, which also named her as an heir. She was to receive 1/3 of his estate on 17 September 1766.8

Barnard Preston was also known as Bernard Preston.3,4 He was born on 2 August 1756.1,3,4,2,5 On 17 September 1766, Barnard Preston was named as an heir in the will of James Preston, his father, (named as Bernard) to share 2/3 of his father's estate equally with his siblings and the children of sister Hannah, who were Martin Preston, Ann Preston, Mary Preston, Sarah Preston, and Elizabeth Preston.6 In 1774 Barnard Preston was a member of the 1st Provincial Convention of Maryland.1 On 10 September 1775, Barnard Preston appeared on a list of Non-Associators and Non-Enrollers in Harford County as having paid 6 pounds.5 He married Sarah Fell Bond about 1776.1 He was listed in the tax record of 1778 in Spesutia Hundred, Harford County, Maryland.7 In August 1791, Barnard Preston served on the petit jury in Harford County, Maryland.5 In March 1796, Barnard Preston served on the petit jury in Harford County, Maryland.5 He and Sarah Fell Bond appeared in the census in 1800 in Harford County, Maryland, listed as having in the household 1 or 2 unknown free males under 10, 1 or 2 unknown free males 10-16 (the question is which age group son Jacob fell into since he was 10), 1 unknown free male 16-26, 2 unknown free females 16-26, and 10 slaves. Also in the household were Dr. Jacob Alexander Preston and James Bond Preston.8 In March 1801, Barnard Preston served on the grand jury in Harford County, Maryland.5 He died in 1831 at age ~75.1
